Cultivate Character and Confidence
Karate is a venerable martial art that originated in Japan, and its students are referred to as “karatekas”. It has evolved significantly over the centuries, and is now predominantly a striking art, using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques, although in some modern styles grappling, throws, joint locks and restraints are also taught. Karate focusses on teaching perseverance, fearlessness, self virtue and leadership. It can be practiced as a sport, a combat sport or as a self-defense method.
According to the World Karate Federation, there are around 100 million practitioners of the sport globally. It was made famous by a string of movies over the years, eventually becoming one of the most well-known martial arts worldwide, and perhaps the first to fully embed itself in Western society due to the success of movies such as the 1984 classic, “The Karate Kid“.
What’s very clear in this martial art is the important of virtue and discipline. It is a sport that doesn’t only teach one how to defend one’s self, but also when it’s right to use those skills. This is especially important for children, who can learn from an early age not to use violence and to respect their elders. Karate is also great in teaching children both how to deal with bullies and how not to be an aggressor to others. It’s the ideal sport, hobby and learning experience for kids!
“Karate generally means ’empty hand’, and it teaches discipline – not in the sense of hurting people, but in the way that one learns what is right, and what is wrong.”
